Dating back to 500BC Monte Alban is more mystery than fact due to the fact there were 4 building phases on this site over 1500 years ending around 1000 AD. The new structures are build over the old ones. Because it was abandoned before the Spanish arrived much of it was untouched left to grow into the jungle. Many ancient artifacts were dicovered and are displayed in a downtown Oaxaca museum.
